The Department of Urban Regional Planning, Kaduna Polytechnic, was established in 1973 as a department of Town Planning and Estate Management to offer Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in both Town Planning and Estate Management. In 1978, the Higher National Diploma (HND) in both Town Planning and Estate Management were introduced. In 1981, the two sections of the department were split to become two separate departments viz: Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Department of Estate Management, to offer both OND and HND. In 1990, Post-HND in Urban and Regional Planning, as a professional qualification was introduced. It is the intention of the department to introduce Masters degree in Technology (M.Tech.) and Doctorate Degree (Phd) in Urban and Regional Planning, as offered by similiar institutions in developed countries. This is however, subject to federal government's endorsement.

ACHIEVEMENTS
(a) The department is the largest planning department in Nigeria.
(b) The department is the only department offering Post-HND in Northern Nigeria
(c) About 70% of the lecturers in the department are registered Town Planners
(d) Employers of labour confirm the high standard and outstanding qualities of its graduates.
(e) Products of the department are found in all planning and environmental organisations of almost all the states in Nigeria including Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The department is additionally blessed with seasoned and experienced lecturers who have been contributing immensely to the development of the planning profession in Kaduna Polytechnic, Northern Nigeria, and Nigeria at large. These lecturers include TPL. J. Gwani, TPL. L.M. Jibrin, TPL. L.B Achi, TPL. E.A. Alalade, TPL. A. Garba, TPL. K.G. Jiriko and TPL. E.S. Lema, amongst others.
Also a number of ex-students of the department occupy prominent positions such as Directors and General Managers in some of the Northern states of Nigeria. In addition, a number of current students won various awards, the federal government scholarships award inclusive.

The department has been participating in partnerships with both Governmental and Non-Governmental organisations, locally and internationally. The partners include:

(c) The Federal Capital Development Authority Abuja
(d) Urban Management Programme/Regional Office for Africa (UMP-ROA)
(e) The United Nations Center for Human Settlement (UNCHS) Kenya Nairobi
(f) Nigeria Urban Forum (NUF) Abuja

BREAKTHROUGH
The breakthrough recorded in the department has been in the field/research, where the department has produced three authors namely:
(a) TPL. K.G. Jiriko (1999), Aspects and Topical Issues in Urban and Regional Planning Practice.
(b) TPL .C.E Moko (1998), Research Methodology for T~se and Project work.
(c) TPL. YA. Sanusi (1997), The 1991 National Housing Nigeria: Analysis.
