Department of Social Sciences

The department of Social Sciences was created in the year 2002 out of the defunct Liberal Studies Department, both departments were established to enlighten and enrich students of the other departments of the institution. The social sciences department was specially carved out to expose students to economic and socio-political issues in the society in which they live and in which they will operate when they graduate.

As a servicing component of the Kaduna Polytechnic, the Social Sciences department has the task of teaching students of technical education the HUMANITIES as they are first and foremost human beings. They must relate with one another before identifying with their professions in the physical sciences, technology and engineering.

The department has the responsibility of inculcating General Studies knowledge into the students with the aim of making them become good and patriotic citizens. The department therefore has a vision of making Nigeria a crime free nation through inculcating into the youth and students the right values as there is no better alternative of fighting ignorance other than education.

Being a servicing department each Unit or College of the Kaduna Polytechnic is allocated with a monitoring officer from the department. Some of the course units undertaken by the department are citizenship education, government, internatonal relations, economics, etc.

The achievements of the department can be seen in its efforts to be relevant to the Kaduna Polytechnic system and not to be reduced to just a servicing one. It has introduced a post graduate diploma in International Relations as its own departmental course. Other programmes in the pipeline are post-graduate diploma in Crime and Crime Management and post graduate diploma in Tourism.

The staff have been in partnership with the community, external agencies and organisations such as the National Orientation Agency and National Population Commission with which the department under the name Liberal Studies, organised seminars and workshops in 1990 for social mobilization.

In other areas of educational advancement, the staff have been involved in organising extra-moral classes for secondary school students at subsidised cost. Staff of the Social Sciences department have undertaken ad-hoc activities with the National Electoral bodies as facilitators. They have also been examiners to West African Examination Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO) and other examination bodies in Nigeria.
