Department of Special and Rehabilitative Education

The department of Special Rehabilitative Education (SRE department) was established in 1977 following the report and recommendation of the Geoffrey Salisbury Commission of the Royal National Institute for the Blind, London. In the process, the Commission also planned the take-off of the recommendation and therefore proposed Special Service Unit for the handicapped persons under the auspices of Social Administration Programme.

To this effect, based on the 1971, Nigerian National Advisory Council for the Blind Recommendation, the Commission further suggested specialised courses in Blind Welfare Administration at the then Staff Development Centre, Kaduna where such potential candidates of different background who are in need could be trained so as to obtain certificate, diploma and post graduate diploma programmes respectively with specialization in rehabilitation of disabled persons.
