The Department of Mechincal Engineering was one of the five foundation departments of the College of Science and Technology at the inception of Kiaduna Polytechnic. The programmes offered by the department then were:
In 1971, the Higher Technical Diploma (H.T.D) programmes were introduced. with the increase in the number of students, coupled with their desire for a wider choice, the following three options were introduced: i. HND (Production) ii. HND (Plant) iii. HND (Refrigeration & Air-conditioning), from which a student could choose a field to major in. However, the last option was dropped in 1985 due to shortage of manpower. In order to meet the immediate manpower needs of the Industries, Civil Service and Parastatals within and around Nigeria, the Department of Mechanical Engineering introduced Motor Vehicle Mechanics (M.V.M) and Mechanical Engineering Technician (M.E.T) programmes in 1975. In 1982, the MVM and MET programmes were phased out because of the high cost of enrolling for the C&G examinations and the late release of results by the same body. These programmes were replaced by equivalent Kaduna Polytechnic programmes based on the same C&G syllabi, namely: i. Automative Mechanics Certificate (A.M.C) - a two year part time programme ii. Automative Technician Certificate (A.T.C) - a two year full time programme iii. Advanced Automotive Technician Certificate (A.A.T.C) - a one year full time programme In 1985, the National Board for Technical Education (N.B.T.E) gave accreditation to both the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes of the department. Re-accreditation of the programmes was granted following the Board's visit as follows: a) ND - 1998 b) HND (Plant Engineering) - 2001 c) HND (Production Engineering) - 1998/2001 The department boasts of forty seven(47) deeply committed and dedicated academic and sixteen (16) technical and administrative staff who worked tirelessly in the past years, in preparing for the Resource Inspection of the Department for the proposed post-HND (Plant and Production) programmes that finally took place in October/November 2002.
As a strategy towards nursing its ambitions to fruition, the Department lays emphasis on encouraging and recommending lecturers who have Master Degrees to pursue Ph.D programmes The Department is aware that education and knowledge are dynamic. It wants to be current with modern methods of research/research facilities. The Mechanical Engineering Department is proud of providing highly skilled high and middle level manpower to Nigeria and beyond. A number of its products are occupying enviable positions in different walks of life, including Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), SHELL Petroleum, CHEVRON-TEXACO, TOTALFINAELF, etc. The Department has also fabricated a number of equipment, some of which are projects of final year students, and these have served as import substitution; such projects include: a. Room Air Cooler b. Multi-Purpose Trolley c. Toggle Link Press d.Groundnut Shelling Machine |
