The need for basic training and continuing education for journalists and other communication specialists is no longer in doubt. Journalism was once regarded as a craft, which one can only learn on the job. But with the accelerated rate of literacy and expertise of all kinds in the society, the job of informing and educating society is clearly beyond the rule-of-thumb-competence of a mere craftsman. As new newspapers and magazines spring up all over Nigeria today, competition for the readers' attention is bound to grow. Even in the discrimination of government publicity, only qualified professionals can be good enough
The programmes of Mass Communication (ND and HND) are designed to respond to the need for improving and updating the skills of practising journalists, information officers and potential advertising and public relations personnel, especially the highly motivated of them who currently lack sufficient formal education.
