Department of Management Studies

The Department was established by Dr. Philips under the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), in 1974. In 1974, Messrs S.A Adebayo and E. Alaiyemola were sponsored to Canada by CIDA in conjuction with Kaduna Polytechnic with the aim that they would serve as nucleus of the department on their return.

The academic staff strength has risen from five (5) in 1974 to sixteen (16) in 1999, and twenty one (21) by December 2002. The department also makes use of part-time lecturers and serving lecturers from other departments as the need arises. The department is also supported by a team of non-academic (i.e. administrative) staff who are currently six in number.

As part of its achievements, it has set up a Management Skill Development Laboratory, the first of its kind in the polytechnic system. The Laboratory is designed to train students, staff and interested members of the public in modern management skills including the use of computers in decision making. It also has internet facilities specifically aimed at enhancing research work in various fields of modern management science.

The most recent achievement recorded by the department is the introduction of Higher National Diploma in Human Resources Management and Higher National Diploma in Production Operations Management programmes. The programmes which were designed by the department have since been accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and so far, it is the only department offering such programmes in Nigeria.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOCIETY
The department has immensely contributed to the manpower needs of Nigeria. Initially, it was particularly concerned with training serving middle-level managers both in the public and private sectors. To this end, it offered short-term-in-house manpower development programmes specifically designed to meet the specific needs of organisations that requested for such training. Today the scope of training programmes offered by the department has been expanded to include modern management courses.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS
The department intends to further peruse the introduction of the Higher Diploma in General Management, a programme whose introduction was earlier suspended by NBTE. It also intends to introduce the Post-HND programme in Management Science whose standard will be comparable to the university Masters degree programme.

Ultimately, the department intends to liase with professional bodies such as the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), to evolve a strong and virile management profession capable of providing Nigeria and other parts of the world with the much needed professional management scientists.
