The department of Electrical Engineering was established in 1968 and was running Ordinary Technician Diploma (OTD) and Higher Technician Diploma of City and Guilds of London in Electrical Engineering among other certificate courses. Since then the department has expanded and is able to cope with modern day demands.

In order to be abreast with the rapidly changing world of technology, the department is training and retraining its personnel in both traditional academic programmes and industry based programmes.
The department is seriously involved in information technology for easy access to the outside world. With the introduction of Post-HND programmes in terms of quality lecturing staff and equipments, the ultimate aims and objectives of the department are to:
a) Mount Higher Degree programmes in Electrical Engineering Technology
b) Full access to information Technology
c) Initiate programmes that will have direct bearing on the lives of the community

ACHIEVEMENTS
The department's graduands are among the highest rated by both industries and institutions. The department is the first to start a Post-HND programme in Nigeria, while its graduates are readily absorbed for Masters Degree programmes in various universities. They are also admitted as corporate members of professional bodies such as Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
The department took part in the National Exhibitions and in the Polytechnic EXPO 2002, and was ranked among the best. In line with its objective to reach out to the immediate community it designed and constructed an FM Transmitter which transmits educative and awareness signals to its immediate neighbourhood up to a radius of about 4 km.

PARTNERSHIP
The department provides consultancy services to some establishments in several states of Nigeria. Of particular importance is the Special Manpower Training it offers to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Staff through special evening programmes at ND and HND level. The training enhances their productivity and educational background. Evening programmes at ND and HND levels are also available to the working class and other people who cannot afford the regular conventional Lectures. Lecturers are sent from time to time to National Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) Zaria, as guest lecturers on special topics, while NITT students also visit the department for workshop and laboratory training every year.

The department has seven sections headed by sectional heads namely:-
1. Control and Automation System Section
2. Measurement and Quality Assurance Section
3. Electronics Section
4. Power System Section
5. Machines Section
6. Communication Engineering Sections
7. Digital and Information Technology Section.

There are seven laboratories associated with each section. There are two workshops Electrical Installation and Maintenance workshop and Electrical workshop. Under each section are Lecturers, Technologists; Technicians and Laboratory Assistants.

RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGH
Being a practically inclined institution, efforts of the polytechnic are geared towards application of research findings. In this regard staff/students have in the department designed and constructed some projects, principal amongst which are:
1. The FM Transmitter
2. Solar Powered Water Pump
3. Solar Dryer
4. Pop-Corn Machine
5. Candle Making Machine
6. Automatic Phase Changer for Power Systems

Each of the above projects has been found to be working satisfactorily.

RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
The department has a football team made up of students. The 2001/02 departmental competition among students from the six departments of College of Engineering was won by the department. There is also the Electrical Engineering Students Association (ELESA) and an Annual Engineering Week where lectures are delivered by eminent personalities in the profession. The department has a seminar committee which organizes seminars where papers are presented for discussion.
