The department of Social Development and Cooperative Studies has been in existence for over 3 decades. Presently, the department runs programmes in the ND, HND and PGD levels with the intention of mounting higher programmes any time the law establishing the polytechnic is amended to pave way for this.
The administrative structure has a Head of Department (HOD) at the top, assisted by sectional head/course coordinators followed by the lecturers with some members of administrative staff (non academic) as supportive.
The department has experienced and dedicated lecturers in the spere of social work and cooperative studies. Services are rendered to the immediate communities in the area of organising workshops, short-term training either singularly or in partnership with government, private sector, or NGOs.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Achievements of the department are in the area of training of social workers. Since the stoppage of overseas training of social workers in Nigeria in the late 1960's, the department is proud to say that over 60% of top officers in the social development and cooperative ministries especially in the 19 nothern states of Nigeria passed through the department.
Staff and students alike engage in recreational activities by organising competitive sporting activities.
The value of self-help and national consciousness is an integral principle and goal of the department.
