In September 1981 the department was split into the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Department of Applied Sciences.

During the 1983/84 session, the Department introduced Higher National Diploma (HND) in Statistics with 12 students. In 1986/87 session the department introduced the ND programme in Computer Studies, and during the 1990/91 session the Enumerators programme was replaced with the Intermediate Certificate Programme in Statistics (ICS).

The total students population as at 2002/03, stood around 1,200. All the programmes of the department are fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

FACILITIES
In the 2002/03 academic year the department acquired two new computer laboratories fully networked with two servers and 35 workstations. This has greatly enhanced the teaching of Computer Science to both the Computer Science and Statistics students. The laboratories are about to be linked to the Internet.

In the 2002/03 session the department won the Diretor's Cup in football and volley ball. To encourage students to participate in sports the department introduced the award of SPECIAL DEPARTMENTAL COLOURS IN SPORTS to deserving sportsmen and women.
The department also has a staff welfare arrangement to which staff make voluntary financial contributions.


The department intends to introduce the following programmes, Post-Graduate (Post-HND) in both Computer Science and Statistics to provide avenues for future training of the ever increasing HND graduates.

Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science
In April, 1975 the department became an integral part of the newly created Department of Mathematics and Related Science courses. In the 1979/80 session the department introduced two new programmes in addition to its servicing role. These are- One year Elementary Course for Enumerators and a National Diploma (ND) in Statistics.
The ND programme commenced with 37 Pre-ND students while the Enumerators programme had 25 students.

The department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science as it is presently called started as a small unit of the then Department of Textile Technology and Science in 1968. The main objective then was to service all the Mathematics and Statistics Courses in the Polytechnic.
