SOME ACHIEVEMENTS
1. Expansion of staff strength and student population;
2. Introduction of new programmes such as Post Graduate Diploma, Material Science and Hydrocarbon Chemistry (Applied Chemistry, Laboratory Instrumentation (Physics/Electronics), Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology) etc.
BREAKTHROUGH IN THE DEPARTMENT
1. Design and construction of Solar Dryer and Cookers;
2. Design and construction of Radio Recievers;
3. Design of Toll-Gate Collectors;
4. Design and construction of Satellite Cables;
5. Development of methods for the cheap production of laboratory chemicals from local waste materials such as batteries, rice husks etc;
6. Design and construction of biogas digesters.
Of equal importance is the fact that the department has to its credit:
i) Qualified, experienced, specialized, hardworking and dedicated staff;
ii) Many ex-students of the department are pursuing postgraduate studies (Post-HND, MSc, Ph.d and Professional Courses) in Polytechnics and Universities in the field of Science, Engineering, Pharmacy and Medicine.
PARTNERSHIPS
1. Training and upgrading of status of many NNPC Staff;
2. Mounting of workshops for some agencies such as Kaduna Environmental Protection Agency, (KEPA) Abuja Environmental Protection Agency (AEPA) etc;
3. Diagnostic test such as Blood Grouping, Malaria Parasite (MP) and Pregnancy tests;
4. Analysis (Chemical and Microbiological) of water, soil and food samples using modern equipments such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), Gas Chromatograph, UV Visible Spectrophotometer, UV Visible DR 4000 Spectrophotometer, Flame Photometer etc;
5. Maintenance and repairs of laboratory equipments;
6. Mounting of remedial programme to enable many candidates to remedy their SSCE deficiencies to qualify them for admission into tertiary institutions;
7. Training and upgrading in status of School and Hospital Laboratory Personnel such as Laboratory Attendants and Technicians through the Intermediate Certificate Programmes.
FUTURE GOALS
The department intends to upgrade its present PGD programme into a Post-HND programme to be accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). This would enable many of the graduands gain direct admission into MSc programmes in tertiary institutions.
